[edit] Issues with search

I keep getting this message when searching:

There was a problem with the wiki search. This is probably temporary; try again in a few moments, or you can search the wiki
through an external search service.

Is this just happening on my end? If so, how do I fix it? -- OptimizationFanatic (talk|contrib) 16:18, 17 May 2008 (MDT)

Same here- just try the external search. Eventually it will fix itself. --Palantini 23:17, 18 May 2008 (MDT)
Thank you for alerting me to this issue! This was due to the downtime last week, and I did not realize that search was not working as a result of this. It should be fixed now. — Blue Dragon (talk) 00:49, 23 May 2008 (MDT)
You're welcome, and thanks for the quick fix! — OptimizationFanatic (talk|contrib) 09:04, 23 May 2008 (MDT)
It's happening again, unfortunately. Just thought I'd tell you. — OptimizationFanatic (talk|contrib) 09:44, 11 June 2008 (MDT)
Thanks again for the report! I feel that I am going to have to add a layer of redundancy or see what is going on with it's now random seeming failures. Thank you for pointing this out! — Blue Dragon (talk) 15:57, 14 June 2008 (MDT)
Occurring yet again. Out of curiosity, are you using Lucene or the default search for Mediawiki? — OptimizationFanatic (talk|contrib) 19:26, 20 July 2008 (MDT)
Lucene. --Green Dragon 20:03, 20 July 2008 (MDT)
It seems to be down again. If I type in the exact thing I'm searching for, it will sometimes find it, others I have to go through the SRD or Homebrew pages. → Kisame93 | Ryan B. (talk to me) 14:05, 13 December 2008 (MST)
Thank you. It should be running now. — Blue Dragon (talk) 19:41, 15 December 2008 (MST)

[edit] No Edit for You!

For the last 3-4 days I have been unable to edit, preview, or otherwise alter any pages. I've tried both IE and Firefox on the matter. Now, i can create pages, but I can't do much after, as it will load and time out. Clearing cookies and the like has not helped and I am puzzled that at least once, it has gone through. I don't know if I'll even be able to post this. Can you help me out?

This was the message that Eiji asked me to give you, from the Tavern.-- Ramses IV 20:37, 11 June 2008 (MDT)

After testing via proxy, the problem appears to be with his IP. — OptimizationFanatic (talk|contrib) 21:04, 11 June 2008 (MDT)
Hm... we do not run any extensive blacklists, but do you know if there is a problem with his ISP port connections, or something similar? If you want, I can mirror it on another domain and monitor closely what the problem is. — Blue Dragon (talk) 15:58, 14 June 2008 (MDT)

[edit] Server Info?

I would like to connect to the Tavern via my own irc client and would like to request the server information.

Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.20.85.157 (talkcontribs) 14:22, 12 June 2008 (MST). Please sign your posts!

Hello. The main reason that this is, as of right now, not allowed is due to the naming scheme used. The IRC client builds the nickname from the D&D Wiki name, or uses the IP address. I will think about implementing some way to keep things working properly. Thank you for the suggestion! — Blue Dragon (talk) 15:59, 14 June 2008 (MDT)

[edit] Any Plans on Upgrading?

Do you plan on upgrading MW anytime soon? And I can't seem to use the "View and edit watchlist" link in my watchlist. The browser just goes blank (the "Edit raw watchlist" link still works, though). —Sledged (talk) 10:49, 25 June 2008 (MDT)

[edit] Backspace

There something that bother me a bit, when someone connect on the tavern, the cursor dissapear from the typing bar. If we were erasing something, we got disconnected, if we were type a long text and don't notice, we lose all we were typing. Anyway to fix that? Thank you in advance for your answer.--Lord Dhazriel 17:18, 27 June 2008 (MDT)

This is unfortunately undoable server-side. It's the browser causing the issue, as, if you hit the backspace key and your cursor is not in the text field (which happens automatically when you hit backspace and the field is empty), it understands that you want to go back a page. Perhaps turning off that hotkey in your browser options would help. — OptimizationFanatic (talk|contrib) 19:27, 28 June 2008 (MDT)

[edit] WikiRPS

Do you have any contact ties to the WikiRPS 'crew'? I hate to use this talk page, and am sorry, but it is perhaps the best chance here. I am interested in resurrecting the WikiRPS project, and getting Cúthalion and others back would really help a lot, so if you could possibly get them, I'd be grateful. If you could also please reply here, it'd be appreciated. I've been fairly active in dirty-polishing some of the pages, but I would feel better if I wasn't alone. Thank you, Minozake, AKA 97.86.250.154 22:23, 16 July 2008 (MDT)

[edit] Tavern Down?

The tavern says:

Connecting to goldmine [166.70.99.91] port 6667
An error occurred: Connecting to IRC: Connection timed out (60 seconds)

Is this a local error or is it an error with the tavern's hosting? --Sabre070 04:08, 20 July 2008 (MDT)

I believe the issue was a power surge were the servers are kept, so the server "goldmine" was down. Anyway, it works now :). --Green Dragon 09:18, 20 July 2008 (MDT)

[edit] Tavern Bug Fixing

I think I have found the source of the backspace bug (using a nifty program called firebug). Would it be possible for you to send me the tavern .cgi files so I can edit them? --Aarnott 06:01, 24 July 2008 (MDT)

Hi Blue Dragon, the backspace bug occurs when a user enters the Tavern. What happens is: you are in the Tavern and another user enters. Your focus on the chat textbox leaves and goes on to the actual web page. So if you were typing something and you start to press backspace to correct a typo (for instance), pressing backspace causes the browser to go back. --208.90.100.164 17:45, 29 August 2008 (MDT)
Oh I wrote that. I wasn't logged in at the time. --Aarnott 17:34, 3 September 2008 (MDT)
Ah, okay! Here is a link to the CGI script that you were looking for. Let me know if this helps! Also, if you want me to work on this problem, then just let me know. — Blue Dragon (talk) 19:55, 3 September 2008 (MDT)

[edit] Working on a RPG wiki, and stumped by Semantic Forms.

A good morning to you sir. :). I am MOST impressed with the tables for flaws, and I would love to implement something similar for my own Wiki. (Immitation is after all the most sincere form of Flattery. :) ) Somewhat adapted for Skills in ArsMagica though.

I see that your Form for flaws uses subst: ... which my own installation doesn't recognize. Is that from MediaWiki SemanticWiki or is there something else I am doing wrong? I really like the idea of being able to add a listing on one place and the skills/npcs/virtues/flaws in another place.

[edit] The Innkeeper is gone

And the tavern seem to have some problem recently, I don't know if it temporary. --Lord Dhazriel 11:51, 5 November 2008 (MST)

[edit] Dandwiki.com error

Earlier (about 15 minutes ago at max) the wiki wouldn't let me connect due to "Too many connections (local host)".. Whats happening? Is this a hosting error or is it due to too many people accessing the wiki? (Possibly a 'denial of service' attack)? --Sabre070 01:53, 17 November 2008 (MST)

Thanks for the error report. What actually happened during that time was I tried to make a backup of the database as quickly as possible. I have realized that this site needs to make periodic backups, and so I have started dumping the database going for speed of the dump instead of an extended period of continued slow use. I think I just chose an arbitrary time... something like 1 AM MST. Do you feel that I should slow the dumping script down so it will take about an hour but the site will be usable throughout that time? Thanks again! — Blue Dragon (talk) 08:17, 17 November 2008 (MST)
I think it would be good to have it fast, just tell people ;) --Sabre070 18:30, 17 November 2008 (MST)

[edit] WikiRPS down

I get a 403 error when I try to access WikiRPS. May I get the status? Minozake 16:58, 18 November 2008 (MST)

Hello Minozake. Thank you for this error report, it should be working now. — Blue Dragon (talk) 08:34, 20 November 2008 (MST)

[edit] Usernames

Can you change people's usernames? I am asking on behalf of User:-Spasm- Who added his -'s (as he does everywhere) without realising that 1) it won't work in the tavern and 2) it looks really bad.. He was wondering if he could remove these from his username? --Sabre070 00:46, 19 November 2008 (MST)

Hello Sabre070. I have made it so that his "-" should be replaced with underscores in the Tavern. Let me know if this doesn't work fully, and also if he wants his name to be changed from within the Wiki also. Thanks! — Blue Dragon (talk) 08:37, 20 November 2008 (MST)

[edit] Random Page

I was wondering if there was any plans or thoughts on putting a "Random Article" link on the navigation menu on the left. Not sure if others find it valuable, but I always personally enjoy finding things I'd never search for myself that way. Just a thought.   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   10:05, 20 November 2008 (MST)

[edit] Tavern bug - Fake Username?

It just says fake username when I try to access the Tavern. Hach-Que 04:35, 22 November 2008 (MST)

The problem lies in the dash in your username and a recent change to the Tavern, I expect. I have the same problem. --TK-Squared 05:43, 22 November 2008 (MST)
I am sorry about those problems. Please let me know if it works now. — Blue Dragon (talk) 21:13, 22 November 2008 (MST)
It would help if the tavern worked :P --Sabre070 21:18, 22 November 2008 (MST)
Thank you for the report. There was some major downtime today, and hopefully the Tavern should be running again (albeit much slower). — Blue Dragon (talk) 21:28, 22 November 2008 (MST)
Its working now. --Sabre070 21:33, 22 November 2008 (MST)

[edit] D&D Wiki Hosting

So, the wiki is hosted in your own home? Does this cost money? If so how much? --Sabre070 21:38, 22 November 2008 (MST)

Blue Dragon and I are twins, and this is none of your business. --Green Dragon 14:18, 24 November 2008 (MST)
I was going to offer hosting from Servage. Its only $8.35AU per month and has basically unlimited bandwidth. --Sabre070 14:20, 24 November 2008 (MST)
Oh, that's the case. I don't know, although I imagine he would be more then happy to host your website. Not sure how much he would charge though. --Green Dragon 14:36, 24 November 2008 (MST)
I was more thinking of changing the wiki to this hosting (if it was cheaper). --Sabre070 22:15, 24 November 2008 (MST)
Absolutely no, that will not happen. Kgprog hosting by far and large exceeds any commercial hosting and it is tailored for wiki's (please see discussion below). --Green Dragon 07:27, 25 November 2008 (MST)

[edit] D&D Wiki Forum

We have a forum template for the "dnd wiki 'official' forum". It is located here: Hach-Que's user page. I was wondering if it would be possible to put it in a frame? On a special page and then have the link below the tavern? --Sabre070 21:38, 22 November 2008 (MST)

Woah, when did we decide D&D Wiki needs a forum? And please do not try to get the forum implemented on the back-end of D&D WIki without even discussing it. It will clutter up the code, and make it messy. --Green Dragon 14:16, 24 November 2008 (MST)
I was just wondering if it was possible, also the reason it needs a forum is due to the large number of users that go elsewhere to play. Plus, we've got inbuilt character sheets ;P --Sabre070 14:22, 24 November 2008 (MST)
Also, it was that we were making the forum system anyway and I didn't know if it was possible to have it hosted on the same site (would have more users and would allow more dandwiki users to use it). Else, we are going to host it on our own web server that will have it open to other role playing games. Another reason why we wanted it with the wiki was that we were going to implement a feature that links pages and descriptions automatically. Sorry for seeming to implement without discussion I just wanted to make sure if it was possible. --Sabre070 22:21, 24 November 2008 (MST)
The forum code is not even close to being finished right now, and probably won't have any development done on it until after end of January when I've finished working solidly on Roket3D --Hach-Que 07:08, 30 November 2008 (MST)

[edit] Contact (off wiki)

Is there a way e can contact you if the wiki goes down? Like, a gmail accout ect.? --Sabre070 14:00, 24 November 2008 (MST)

Yes, of course. I'll send you an email about it. Also, the hosting that I am using is quite a bit more advanced than what would be available with a hosting plan through a company... e.g. think about the Tavern and the MoI system. Also, I have a nearly dedicated dual dual-core 3.0 GHz Intel Xeon box running this wiki, which is nothing close to the power that <$50/month hosting would get me. This site gets around 400,000 page hits per day. Thanks for the offer though! — Blue Dragon (talk) 22:43, 24 November 2008 (MST)
Also, with regards to the above statement about having hosting on this machine, I would definitely be willing to take it into consideration. Price is not an issue, and even with this weekend of D&D Wiki being basically dead, this machine (tundra) has about 98.5% uptime. However, this discussion should definitely be talked about on the main page or something! — Blue Dragon (talk) 22:46, 24 November 2008 (MST)
Another issue with the offer to host offsite is that Wikis require much more server side optimization to run adequately, and putting this website on a box that I don't have control over would not allow me to do any of that. Not to mention that I don't trust other people more than I trust myself ... ;). — Blue Dragon (talk) 22:54, 24 November 2008 (MST)

[edit] Template Question

I was trying to code a template navbox (you can see an example of the end-goal layout style of said template at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:D%26D_materials) and am having extreme difficulties (see: Template:Valgora). Is it just not possible with this different wiki or am I doing something grossly wrong? If not possible we can delete the template page I was trying.   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   10:38, 29 November 2008 (MST)

I noticed the other day in the Recent changes that you had played around a bit with templates. Any news, or will this just not be possible? I built the example navigation onm wikipedia that I used so I'm just now baffled that I can't figure it out. I'd just feel alot smarter and better if I'm told its currently not possible and it wasn't just me being a noob. But knowing me, it probably was. Thanks again.   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   14:50, 2 December 2008 (MST)
Hey Hooper. Don't worry, as it stands right now it is not possible. I will put it on my list of things to get working eventually, but for now you might want to implement another solution. Let me know if this is the only solution that will work, and then I will work on it when I get a chance. — Blue Dragon (talk) 23:12, 4 December 2008 (MST)
Oh no, thats fine. Was more of a "curious and what if" kind of thing. It'd be nice once its possible, but definately no rush. Thanks.   Hooper   talk    contribs    email   07:47, 5 December 2008 (MST)

[edit] Access Denied: No connections allowed

Nope, not just you. --Daniel Draco 11:55, 30 November 2008 (MST)
Im also having the same problem i though i was banned or somthing. --User:Vilios 11:00 am (GMT-04:00) 2 December 2008
I'm sorry for this problem. Can you please let me know if it is still occurring? Sorry, and thanks. — Blue Dragon (talk) 09:56, 2 December 2008 (MST)
It is not. It has been fixed. --TK-Squared 10:01, 2 December 2008 (MST)

[edit] TSR

D&D is a very awesome game, but im afraid your page isn't quite complete without AD&D, any plans for an update to include it? some of us still play it out there! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.74.90.250 (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts!

Unfortunately, there is no free content for editions older than 3e. It would be great to have earlier content, but we cannot legally host it. --Daniel Draco 13:54, 1 December 2008 (MST)
We could however host home brew content. This may be discussed. (It is all we are doing with 4e, why not earlier versions?). --Sabre070 00:29, 5 December 2008 (MST)

[edit] Tavern Moderators

I hate to bug you, but the tavern really does need to have mods. I know that the tavern isn't currently coded in such a way as to allow that...and progress in fixing that? --Daniel Draco 14:45, 5 December 2008 (MST)

[edit] Tavern History Not Logging

The Tavern History doesn't appear to be recording conversation from the Tavern any longer. --Ganteka 12:45, 17 December 2008 (MST)

[edit] Nickname Already in Use?

the tavern is telling me that my nickname is already in use. I was chatting and then , boom. It stopped letting me on. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Big rob (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts!

Happens all the time. What probably happened is that someone entered the chat, which takes the focus off the text box and onto the page. When you press backspace, it takes you back one page. The tavern didn't know you left, so when you tried to re-enter, it still thought you were there. When it tells you your name is already in use, enter /nick newnick, where newnick is a temporary username. What I usually do to prevent the backspace thing from happening in the first place is this: when I open the tavern, I do so in a new tab or window. That way, there are no previous pages for it to go back to, and the backspace bug can't happen. --Daniel Draco 16:56, 31 December 2008 (MST)

[edit] Fatal Error?

About an hour ago, I started to try and reorganize DnD Epic Spells/Powers so that it would look better, I'd managed to get most of the details organized and had made a couple of templates to sort out names (will be moving the page later btw everyone), but then I tried to preview the page, and this message popped up:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 20971520 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 121693 bytes) in /home/dandwiki-com/public_html/w/extensions/DynamicPageList/DynamicPageList2.php on line 3539

If could you explain what is wrong or what I did wrong, it would be much appriciated. Thank you. → Rith 20:30, 1 January 2009 (MST)

Hello Rith, It looks like DPL doesn't have enough memory available to it to carry out the operation. I bumped up the memory quite a bit... could you let me know if it works now? I hope you had the page backed up! :)Blue Dragon (talk) 11:20, 4 January 2009 (MST)
Nope, still seeming to be having something of a problem :( (would the fact that I'm working with SMW format make any kind of a difference here?) → Rith 02:07, 5 January 2009 (MST)
Make sure all the parameters are correct. I remember someone else had this same error because they were calling up a list of all the pages on D&D Wiki accidently. --Green Dragon 02:43, 5 January 2009 (MST)

[edit] Another.. Strange Error in the Tavern

A person today couldn't see the users typing.. They had to use the history to see our text.. I don't think it is a problem with the tavern but it could be (tho this is the only case so far). --Sabre070 02:36, 5 January 2009 (MST)
